Support Class Enrolment

Murwillumbah East Public School has two Multi-Categorical Support Classes. Each class has a maximum of seven students, taught by one teacher with the assistance of an SLSO.

Multi-Categorical support classes are specialised class setting designed to support students with diverse learning needs. These classes provide specialist and intensive support for eligible students with a diagnosed intellectual or physical disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder, mental health diagnosis, sensory processing disorder or behaviour disorders.

The curriculum in these classes is tailored to address individual learning goals and may include modified teaching strategies, personalized support, and therapies as needed. The aim is to provide a nurturing environment where each student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, ensuring they receive the necessary support to reach their full potential within the school community.

If your child is enrolled in a support class in a mainstream school, there is the flexibility for them to undertake some of their learning in other mainstream classes in the same school, when appropriate.

For morning information please see the Department Of Education Support Class pages.

Access Request - Support Class Application Process

How can my child be placed in a support class?

You can’t enrol your child directly into our support class but your local school can help you with this process.  The first step is to speak to your child’s local school or pre-school.

The school will work with you to determine if your child is eligible for our classes, and if this type of support will meet their needs.

This option is available when:

  • Your child has significant support needs and meets the department's disability criteria.
  • This type of specialist support will meet their educational needs.
  • An application is completed in collaboration with you. This is usually arranged by the learning and support team at the school your child is enrolled in.

A local support class panel considers the application and decides an outcome. Murwillumbah East Public School does not take part in this decision because our Support Classes are a regional resource.

This application is called an ‘access request’ and is written by your local school.

We are happy to answer any questions relating to the process and to take families on tours to help them make the decision.

Students With Disability in a Mainstream Class

The Integration Funding Support program helps schools to support students attending mainstream classes who have moderate to high learning and support needs as defined by the department.

This means children with additional learning needs can be successful within our mainstream classes, with the support of additional resources and staff.

We can begin this process when children are in preschool or at any stage throughout their schooling. However, it is best to have the funding as soon as possible so that we can set them up for success from the first day.

Please let us know your child's needs when you enrol so that we can arrange a meeting to discuss how to best support your child and family.
