Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

Healthy, Safe and Active Lifestyles

These programs focus on the interrelationship between health and physical activity concepts. Students develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to empower them to make healthy and safe choices and take action to promote the health, safety and wellbeing of their communities. They engage with a range of health issues and identify strategies to keep them healthy, safe and active.

MEPS has always been seen as a rich sporting school. We provides a range of sporting programs for our students. Including:

School Sport

All classes provide a PE program that focuses on developing fundamental movement skills. Students develop confidence and competence to engage in physical activity. They develop an understanding of movement concepts and the features of movement composition as they engage in a variety of planned and improvised movement experiences. Students create and compose movement to achieve specific purposes and performance goals. Through movement experiences students also develop self-management and interpersonal skills to support them to strive for enhanced performance and participation in a lifetime of physical activity.

Carnivals

MEPS hosts swimming, athletics and cross-country carnivals each year.

Students are encouraged to become involved at a level with which they feel comfortable and to extend this involvement to realise the potential harboured within each individual. Those children who exhibit particular talents in sport have access to representative sports at a number of levels, from school through to national.

GALA Days

Gala days provide interschool competitions for a range of sports giving opportunities for our students to participate in competitive sports. This includes sports such as Rugby, Touch, Netball and many more.

Students in Years 3-6 can try out for a team and if successful will represent the school. MEPS teams are coached by our PE and classroom teachers within regular school hours and are often very competitive.

Leisure Sports

MEPS has an extensive Leisure Sports Program that operates in Term 3 each year.

We offer traditional sports throughout the rest of the year but in Term 3, Years 3-6 students are offered a range of unique sports including beach games, cycling, fishing, skateboarding/scootering, BMX and other teachers lead through their own unique skill set.

The Leisure Sports program offers many benefits to students. They learn teamwork and resilience while trying new activities and developing their physical skills. The program encourages outdoor exploration and appreciation for nature, providing a refreshing break from regular studies. These experiences enrich students' school lives by broadening their perspectives on sports and leisure.
