English

English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.

An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.

The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.

Students develop their language skills through activities involving speaking and listening, reading and writing, and viewing and representing.

They learn about language and literature through working with a wide range of print, spoken, visual, media, multimedia and digital texts. They interpret and express their views on what they hear, see and read.

They create written and digital texts and deliver formal and informal presentations.

At MEPS, we teach the NSW DoE Units of work in K-6, and we differentiate these for individual class and student needs.

K-2 Whole Class Instruction - Initalit

MEPS is currently introducing InitalLit into K-2 classes. InitiaLit is a K-2, whole-class, research-based, explicit literacy program It is specifically designed for early literacy instruction in primary schools, focusing on foundational skills that are crucial for young children learning to read.

InitiaLit aims to provide systematic and explicit teaching in phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The program is structured to support teachers in delivering effective literacy instruction to help all students, particularly those at risk of falling behind, develop strong reading skills from the outset of their education.

Minilit Sage - K-2 Intervention

MiniLit Sage (Years 1&2)  focuses on providing targeted literacy intervention to small groups of young children who are struggling with reading and related skills. It is a research-based program designed to provide effective literacy intervention and support to children and adults who struggle with reading and related skills.

MiniLit Sage typically includes systematic and structured lessons that address phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The program is designed to be delivered by trained teachers or tutors in small group settings, allowing for personalized instruction and support. The goal of MiniLit Sage, like other MultiLit programs, is to improve literacy outcomes and help students achieve proficiency in reading during their early years of schooling.

MultiLit - Years 3-6 Intervention

MultiLit  programs typically involve structured, evidence-based approaches to teaching reading, including phonics instruction, fluency development, vocabulary building, and comprehension strategies. The aim of MultiLit is to improve reading abilities and outcomes for individuals who may be experiencing difficulties in literacy.

High Potential and GIfted Education (HPGE)

At MEPS, we differentiate the curriculum to support HPGE learners. Children with high potential like to be challenged. A rapid rate of learning means these children may enjoy opportunities beyond the typical level of other children their age. At MEPS, we differentiate the curriculum to support HPGE learners.

If you observe your child is more advanced than their peers, in any area or domain, it is recommended that you discuss this with your child's teacher or other professional.
