At the end of last term , Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students from Murwillumbah East Primary School went on an exciting excursion. Students in Stage One were learning about the various aspects of transport, including different forms of transport, and the systems and people within the industry. Teachers at Murwillumbah East are continually looking at ways to make learning relevant and engaging for their students, and when the staff decided to organise a transport excursion to link in with their learning, the teachers may have been more excited than the students!
The day started with all of the students boarding a bus to travel to Murwillumbah Airport. We were met by Bruce Guard, who had organised planes to take off and land from the moment the students arrived. Bruce took the students on a personalised tour of the airport, discussing all the people who use the airstrip, showing the students how a plane flies and perhaps most importantly giving many children the opportunity to sit in a plane. This was the highlight of the day for some of our students and we are sure that we will have a lot of pilots in the future thanks to Bruce!
The buses then continued our journey to Varsity Lakes Train Station. Here students boarded a train for a return trip to Robina Train Station. For many students this was their first time on a train, and everyone appreciated the conductor waving as the train passed. As the buses drove past Coolangatta airport, students were lucky enough to watch a helicopter take off. Miss Smith says she planned this, but the students aren't convinced.
Our final journey was down the Tweed River, on a Tweed Endeavour Cruise. Students enjoyed feeding the birds and watching the pelicans swoop down to eat their food during the cruise. A game of Transport Spotting was played on the cruise, with students seeing trucks as we travelled under bridges, inflatable boats and jet skis.
