NIkr the Kangaroo by Xane Bowen.
A long time ago a group of people lived on their land near the hills. Every day the children would run around the desert . " Look what I can see on the other side of the cactus." said a boy. It was Nikr the first kangaroo. The boy pushed the kangaroo up into the air. The children threw him into the bushes , then they bashed him over the head.
The children waited. They heard a loud snap! It was Winyaka the great spirit. He saw what they had done to Nikr his son. Winyaka shook with rage. He told the snakes to gather up the clouds and paint themselves. The snakes smashed the clouds together to make rain. There was a huge flood and a tidal wave. It rained and rained really hard. Lots of people in the village died. Some survived to tell the story of why we should never hurt kangaroos. Because of Nikr the first kangaroo.
Isack the Echidna by Jack McClymont.
Along time ago a village of people lived on their land near a lake. Every morning the children ran around the lake. " Look what I've found." called a boy from behind the bushes. It was Isack the first echidna. The boy tossed him out of the bush. The children kicked him again and again. They pulled out his spikes and drowned him.
The children waited, then they heard a huge roar ! Wnickackuaa the monster of the water was angry when they saw what they had done to Isack his son. He told the snakes to gather all the water and he made an earthquake in the water. This became a huge tidal wave and killed all the villagers except a man and a woman who grabbed onto a kangaroos tail and survived and made babies. Still today we are forbidden to harm echidnas, because we remember the story of Isack the first echidna.
Coodu the Koala by Zoe Quinn .
When time began, a village of people lived on their land near the river. Every evening the children skipped around the bush. One evening, a girl behind the bush called out " Look what I've found." It was Coodu the first koala. The girl pulled the koala out of the tree and threw her up into the air. The children pulled her off the branches and put mud in her mouth. Then they put sharp grass into her eyes.
The children waited, they heard a scream. Boousha the great spirit saw what they had done to Coodu her daughter. Boousha made the kookaburras paint themselves and dance around. The sky burst open and it rained. There was a huge cyclone, then it rained and rained. Lots of people in the village died. Some people lived and today we are not allowed to hurt the koalas, because we remember the story of Coodu the first koala.
